In Vitro Evaluation of the Activity of Terpenes and Cannabidiol against Human Coronavirus E229

The activity of a new, terpene-based formulation, code-named NT-VRL-1, against Human Coronavirus (HCoV) strain 229E was evaluated in human lung fibroblasts (MRC-5 cells), with and without the addition cannabidiol (CBD). main constituents terpene formulation used for experiment were beta caryophyllene, eucalyptol, citral. tested exhibited an antiviral effect when it pre-incubated host cells prior to virus infection. combination NT-VRL-1 CBD potentiated better than positive controls pyrazofurin glycyrrhizin. There strong correlation between quantitative results from cell-viability assay cytopathic seen under microscope after 72 h. To best our knowledge, this is first report terpenes coronavirus.
